James 1

Golf balls, Eagles and Bullies

The letter of James is an awesome letter because it is written to Christians who are under pressure. They are suffering, they are confused about how to live out their faith in a dark and troublesome world and they are afflicted by money (either the lack of it or having too much). James applies Christ’s Sermon on the Mount to the daily struggle that every Christian faces. If you want to be encouraged on how to enjoy your faith (kingdom) more then listen to my message on the whole book of James. the Rev

02 Turning trials into triumphs E-mail
Sunday, 17 June 2007

1 Peter 1:1-9

Seeing trials as opportunities

James confronts us from the very beginning. Consider trials with joy. Christ’s Kingdom is the upside down kingdom and so we should not be surprised to find that we are to have an attitude of joy in the midst of hardship. The reason why we can do this is because we understand that hardship has a purpose and that purpose has a process and that process will make us spiritually mature. As we grow in our Christian maturity we will grow in our ability to turn trials into triumphs. the Rev

Proverbs 2

Live in the real world

Humans have a remarkable ability to interpret the world the way they want to. This is a fancy way of saying that we like to live in our own fantasy world; where we are popular, successful, and important. God uses suffering to confront our fantasy with reality. Suffering is too valuable to waste. Next time your world falls apart, don’t try and put it all back together again but ask God to give you wisdom. When your world falls apart you have an opportunity to build something different, something better. Wisdom will help you live in the real world. the Rev

Psalm 49

Don’t fight it

Money is like fear. The more you think about it the more it consumes you. Giving it away won’t free you because you’ll only worry about not having it. Real financial freedom comes from enjoying real worth, real security and real power. Money cannot give you any of these things. Listen to this message and be encouraged to get involved in ministry that won’t cost you anything but potentially will change the world. the Rev

James 1:1-12

Is suffering worth it?

“Nothing’s ever easy” expresses the grind of life. Sometimes when the wheels really fall off we begin to wonder whether something is worth doing. For example you may try and fix something yourself but only seem to make things worse. Sometimes when things get tough we can feel like giving up. James is a pastor who wants to encourage Christians who are under pressure to keep going and not to give up. He encourages Christians by giving them very good reasons why it’s worth enduring trials for God. the Rev

James 1:1-18

Pre-Heavenly Beings

God has done this really wacky thing where he has started to change people into what they will be like in heaven. In heaven there will be no tears, no anger, no suffering, no pain, no despair or depression, no addiction. In heaven there will be perfect fellowship, friendship with God, people, angels and the new world. This message seeks to encourage believers to enjoy this good life now by not being deceived, by valuing God’s gifts and by living as God’s Pre-Heavenly beings. the Rev

Feeelinnngs, nothing more than feeeelings

Many of us do what we feel. We don’t feel like doing the ironing so we don’t until we get to a point where we feel ironing is better than going down the street in our underwear. If you are tired of the topsy turvy world of a life run by feelings then it’s time to grow up. You should grow up in a way that frees you from doing what you feel. This means you can love someone even though you don’t feel like it. You can do the ironing; get that assignment done early because you are going to do it for the right reason. Real freedom is a life lived for God and others, not to keep your feelings happy. Don’t let feelings wreck your life, be a doer of God’s word and be blessed. the Rev

Practice Pure Religion

Human beings are religious by nature. It takes atheism (a form of anti-religion) to knock and to keep religion out of a person’s life. Most people believe in something spiritual, lots have a particular religion, Buddhism is popular in the West, Islam and Hinduism is prominent in the East. But is your religion of real help. Religions that don’t change who you are on the inside are only cosmetic and shallow. There are three tests you can apply to see whether your religion is pleasing to God. These are your personal behaviour (tongue), your social concern (look after the helpless) and your inner values (not corrupted by the world). the Rev

Gladiator without the clamour

Ancient Rome was not walk in the park unless you were a well connected rich male. The rich could exploit the poor without the poor having the right to legal action, although the rich could take legal action against the poor. Those who were not citizens had even less rights. Animals had more rights than slaves. Every country has its own class system. This message collides head on with the idea that the rich are better than the poor. This is confronting for us who enjoy the comforts that our middle class gives us. The challenge is to give due respect to everyone regardless of their social standing. the Rev

Lounge room sermons

Today’s sermon is brought to you from my lounge room away from home. We’ve toned this down a lot since I injured my knee yesterday. Getting injured is a great way of becoming the centre of attention; everyone wants to know what happened and others are happy to be at your beck and call. Unfortunately seeking favouritism has its costs. Unless you’re prepared to injure your knee you’re going to have to earn someone’s favour by being like them, being kind to them and basically sucking up to them. This message seeks to help you free yourself from this dependency for people’s favour. the Rev

A peer pressure special

We often connect our self worth with the type of friends we have around us. If we are friends with those who are cool, or influential then it makes us feel important, successful and accepted. But God says that the poor of this world are chosen by him to be rich in faith and it is they who will inherit the Kingdom. So why invest so much of our energy into people who don’t really care for us for who we are. Rather than trying to have the best of friends around you God wants you to be the best of friends to those who are poor in your eyes. It might be those who aren’t popular at school, or those who have menial tasks at work. Life is more about being a friend than having friends. the Rev

We are all encouraged to be self absorbed. For a long time we have been told that to be happy and healthy we need to have a good self esteem. Much has been written to encourage those who struggle with low self esteem. What is my purpose for being alive?

Every single person has the same purpose for being alive. God made us in his image, in his likeness and so our purpose is to be like God. We are to ‘image’ God in our work and our relationships. For example God reveals himself as a Father, brother, friend, servant, shepherd, King and many more. So we are to reflect God in the way that we are a Father (mother), brother, friend, employer or employee. Be the difference that changes the world

It is a big mistake to think you have to be powerful, influential, beautiful and successful to make a difference in this world. God promises that ‘mercy triumphs over judgment’ and we need to take him at his word. We can side step what is culturally expected of us and show mercy to people beneath our social class, or social group of friends. Everyone loses things. Sometimes it takes a while before we realise something is missing which makes it hard to retrace our steps to work out where it might be. Breaking point

The human heart can be a very tough nut to crack but God is very good at it. He knows just how much pressure to apply and just the right way to do it. The problem isn’t so much our stubbornness because in the right place that can be a real asset.

rope
What is your breaking point?
The greatest challenge for God is to crack the pride that covers our hearts. Most often he does this by reminding us that we are not god, we are not in control of even the simplest things. Just yesterday the garage roller door broke and I couldn’t open it without getting help. That proves that I’m not as powerful or as clever as God. If I can’t open a roller door no wonder I’m having trouble with the rest of my life. This of course is a painful process for us; it hurts to be brought to breaking point. But God has a very good reason for cracking out hearts. He does this so that he can get through to us that he cares for us and that we really need him, that we can’t do it on our own. the Rev

I find that God does make me live what I preach, either before the sermon or after and sometimes both. It's an aspect of ministry which can make it really hard. A lot of things went wrong, I had writers block (which is increasingly frustrating as the deadline approaches). I had interruptions (including the police, no I wasn't in trouble) and then my computer has progressively died and last night I didn't get a wink of sleep. An end that marks a beginning

This is the last message I will be preaching on James. As someone jokingly said I should have done one more and made it an even 40 sermons (40 is a biblical number). I hope it hasn’t felt like 40 years in the desert or 40 days without food or water. None the less we have come to the end of our time in James. The ending marks the beginning of a new journey. This little letter has sought to encourage us to enjoy God’s kingdom by overcoming and enduring the challenges to our faith. In the last two verses we are told to help each other live by the truth of this letter. The Church is a community of people who help each other live in and by the truth, when we stumble and stray we seek to help each other so that we might be restored once more with God and the Church community. the Rev
