Spaced out Rev

For some reason I wasn’t mentally firing on all cylinders this morning. Tash (chaplaincy volunteer) noticed the minute I walked into the Guy’s (Chaplain’s) office. It’s just going to be one of those vague days. Fortunately I’m not a boxer going into a fight because I’d probably miss the starting bell and get KO’d within seconds.

Patience

Welcome to Chris, Woo Min, Brooke and Taryn who were very patient with me as they had to spell out their names for me (more than once). Hopefully I have got them right, let me know if I haven’t.

Freedom

Welcome Kara and Erin to the class. Today we all agreed that it was great that we could all believe what we wanted in freedom and also that we respected each other. Everyone was able to share what they believed.

Soul

We nearly all believed that people had a soul. Reincarnation was popular, the idea of learning lessons that are carried into another life was appealing, particularly in terms of bringing a greater sense of purpose and progression. The soul is the part of us that continues after death and is who we are. For example we often speak of owning our body, “this is my hand.” The soul uses the body to express itself. Addictions occur when the soul gives the body control. For example alcoholism and obesity occur because a person doesn’t say no to the impulse or graving for alcohol or food. Counselling seeks to help the soul gain control over the body, to teach the person to be able to say no to the body. One student picked up on this by saying that addictions are what people use to compensate for something in their lives. If they are sad they eat to much or drink to much because it makes them feel better.

Spiritual Pictionary

We kicked off today with playing a game of speed Pictionary. First team to get through the list of words won. Trick was we were doing words like, honesty, courage, love, family, freedom, wealth.  Some proved to be a challenge. Here are a few of my favourite drawings.

5 Rules for the world

Students were encouraged to write down five rules or principles that the entire world would follow. Here is a selection of their suggestions:

  • Creamie Soda should be supplied free every morning.

  • Governments should think before they act

  • No Religions

  • No one can be stereotyped; no racism, no sexism or any other ‘isms’

  • No fighting and killing

Matrix
New
Neo chooses the Truth

It’s a confusing movie for those who have watched it. Far greater is the challenge of having to explain it in summary form. Essentially people have been plugged into machines that use their heat as a source of energy. To keep people plugged in they are hooked up to a computer generated world, a prison for the mind. There are a few characters who are unplugged who help free people; they offer them the truth by waking them up in the real world.

Would you want to be awakened to the truth if it means that you would be worse off even though you would be free? Many people live in a world of their own making. Truth is very confronting, none of us likes the idea of being controlled.

Hot gameImage

The world is simulated on Tennis Court. All the students live in the boundaries of the tennis court. Two students were chosen to represent bad circumstances in live that cause pain and hardship. If they tagged a student then they would have to stand still with one hand on their head. Two students could put their arms around them and free them. Get tagged a second time and put two hands on your head. This means that you need three students to free you. Get tagged a third time and you have to sit down and can only be freed by four students. It’s a hot game because it involves running and the stress of being tagged and having to hope that some students will team up to free you.

To mix it up more people were chosen to be baddies and that made it much harder to stay free. Then I was chosen to have the ability to free whoever I wanted no matter how many times they had been tagged. Lots of people called out ‘free me Rev.’ I would free them and two seconds later they needed freeing again.
