Wow, here we are already. To think I’ve only just over Christmas. I gave the students the choice of calling me the Rev or my real name. They asked me what my real name was and I said it was Morpheus that spun them out. Some had seen the Matrix and realised I was only mess’ in with them. So I asked them what they would change their names to and they all completely wimped out except for Ryan who is called Steve (probably after Stevie Wonder) and Mitch who picked Frodo. Victoria chose ‘I don’t know’ Winoma picked something like ‘I don’t know what to pick’ Mitch S was happy to stick with his name as was Jason and Daniel. So I suggested that Nebuchadnezzar would be a good name although it is hard to spell. They thought I was mad but I explained that Nebuchadnezzar was a very famous Babylonian King and Morpheus’ ship was also called the Nebuchadnezzar.

Marvel

Steve and I discussed which Marvel movie we liked the best. We agreed that Xmen was really good, he liked Spiderman but I think it’s a bit wimpy. My favourite is the Hulk because I think it is a very well told story but also because I always wanted to be able to turn into the Hulk when I was at school.

Word association

What do you think when you hear the world ‘Spirituality?’ Spirits, prayer, God, Jesus Christ. I tried and failed to get the students to think about what other forms of spirituality there are, like Buddhism. Some had done RE in primary school and found it boring. Well hopefully they won’t find this class to be the same.

Questions

Students were given a list of questions and asked to answer two. The most popular was

• If you could take a pill that would make you live for a thousand years, would you? Why?

I think they all said they would not want to take the pill because they would find it really hard to have everyone they know die. A bit like the guy in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen; Dorian Gray who could not be killed because his soul/like was in a painting. He was very bored, as you would expect living for thousands of years.

• If you could change one thing (in the school, country, or world), what would it be?

The student answered that he would removing fighting so that there could be peace in the world. He said that most wars started with fights and he was sick of it.

• If you could meet anyone (dead or alive), who would you choose to meet?

The student said that he would like to meet his grandfather who died before he was born.

• Would you like to know the date of your death?

Several students said they would like to know the date of their death so that they could do the things they wanted before then. However we were concerned that it might be off putting knowing of your imminent death, perhaps you would get to absorbed by it to enjoy people and things. The other question we had was whether it was impossible to die before then. This might mean you could get hit by a bus and still be kind of alive, maybe a bit messy but still going.
