Sex Ed and spirituality

Apparently some students expected that our class was going to be the sex education class. While sex and spirituality start with the same letter they are very different classes. We try and make it clear that the goal of our classes is to encourage open discussion about spiritual issues.

Past experiences

Nearly all the students had negative memories of RE when they were in primary school. Their experience was one of mystery and boredom. Mystery in the sense that they didn’t understand a word that was being spoken and boredom because well it was boring. This usually means they did not see how RE was relevant to their lives. Hopefully they will get more out of these discussions.

As usual

Welcome to Isaac, Josh, Kevin, Chris and Mitch. As usual I tell the students that this blog is written to reflect some aspect of our class and so that they should check out whether they make it onto the blog.

Time machines, the ability to have anything and a Teleporter

What Josh could have

A student, in answer to where they would go in history if they had a time machine, said they would go to the year 3,000. They would like to know if the world still exists, what changes have been made; like whether we have been successful in stopping global warming.

Two students opted to know the date of their death. If they had a few years to go they said they would travel. The other student would want to do something important or help people before they died.

A student said they would like the ability to have anything they wanted for free. They could go to a shop and have anything they wanted, like a bike, or house from a real estate agent. This would make them very rich and powerful. They also said they could use their power to help charities. It didn’t seem to bother the student that it would be hard to know who your real friends were. A lot of people would just want to use you.

Lastly a student wanted the ability to teleport anywhere in the world. After all it would be a great way to see the world. No time or money wasted on air fares. Another application that was mentioned was you could rob banks and get away with it. Even if you were caught you could teleport out of custody.
