Simpson’s documentary on the SoulBart and God

Today we watched the Simpson’s Episode where Bart sells his soul for five bucks. Bart finds he loses his sense of humour, automatic doors don’t work, the dog and cat are scared of him, he has nightmares of not getting to heaven. All of this is an exploration of what the soul is and what it does.

Tom’s demonstration and the question Who am I?

Tom was volunteered to get up the front and help me demonstrate that we are more than just a biological body. I asked Tom clap his hands together which he did. Then I asked the class what would happen if we chopped Tom’s hands off (apart from going to jail). I asked Tom who he would be and he answered Tom. You see our body is not who we are, we own it and use it. The soul is the driver of the body. So you are more than your body. Whether you lose your hands or not you are still the same person in yourself, you retain your sense of identity.

Exploring the implications

Sometimes we do things because it makes us feel good. We may eat comfort food, some people take drugs or drink alcohol, some people have sexual relationships without perhaps realising that they might be trying to meet a deeper need in their lives; a spiritual need.

If you come to see that you are both a spiritual and physical being it can set you free. For example if your body says eat chocolate (craving) you (soul) can say no. Sometimes it’s your soul that is having problems and it tries to compensate by using the body to make it feel better. For example if you are feeling guilty you might eat chocolate to feel better. Or you might try and feel accepted by your friends. It is better to learn to be honest with yourself and sort out why you feel guilty rather than avoiding it.

The God connection

Let me suggest that our soul is made to be connected with God. Sometimes the reason we feel a sense of disconnection, guilt, fear, anxiety is because we have been ignoring God and the fact that we are both a physical and spiritual being. My encouragement is for you to explore your spirituality.
