One of the cardinal rules of barracking for a football team is loyalty. This helps you support your team when they are playing badly; loyalty wants to see them improve. We are not blind to our team’s lousy performance, it doesn’t mean we don’t get frustrated but we hang in there withthem.

We get this ability from God. When God decided to choose a people group to barrack for he chose the one on the bottom of the ladder. He built them up and provided everything they needed. Despite God’s devotion their performance was lousy. They kept turning against God, and running off with false gods, they disobeyed God at nearly every turn. God would let them go, they would get in trouble and then he would save them and then they wouldrun off again. Even when the people gave up on God he did not give up on them.Malachi is the story of God’s devotion for Israel and his desire to get them to the top of the spiritual ladder despite them being wooden spooners, despite them having given up on God, his love and loyalty is faithful.
