Much more than a swinging movie

Peter and MJ grow up

This third film stands out from the others in a number of ways. There is more depth to the characters and plot which makes the action far more enjoyable than the first two instalments. The first two films were ok but it was hard to connect to the computer generated spider man (more about this later). The on/off relationship between Peter and MJ was really annoying, particularly in the second film. Here is where the improvement is most noticeable.

Important message

I was pleasantly shocked with this films upgraded message. Previously it was “With great power comes great responsibility.” Now we get walked through ‘Anger’ ‘Revenge’ and ‘Forgiveness.’ Most films are about getting even. Spider man 3 explores the pit falls of anger and revenge. It was so refreshing to be encouraged not to seek revenge but to forgive. I was amazed.  

Personal issues

All the characters were much more engaging because they were all flawed in some way. MJ was preoccupied with her career, Peter was preoccupied by his success as Spiderman which then moved into anger and revenge, Harry was preoccupied with revenge. Each character, even the new Sand Man, face their personal struggles. I think this is the reason that for most of the time Spiderman is Peter Parker; his mask is almost always off. I think this helps us the audience connect better with the character.

Real Friendship

As I said this film tackles a lot more than the previous films. Friendship is another theme. Harry and Peter struggle through the film. Peter and MJ have their struggles but in the end they become closer than if Peter’s marriage proposals had gone to plan. There is realness to the way the film ends. It was great to see Harry make better choices than his father and be willing to sacrifice himself for his friend. Peter forgives the Sandman for killing his Uncle and this forges a new relationship for both of them.

You can choose

There is a lot of hope in this film. So often we carry resentment, anger and a desire for revenge. But we don’t have to. If Peter can forgive Sandman then we can forgive. If Harry can overcome his anger over his father’s death then we to can help those we once hated.

Jesus Christ and Spiderman

Jesus Christ came to save the very people who killed him. He prayed for the very ones who nailed them to the cross, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34. He teaches his disciples to love their enemies. He teaches us not to hold grudges but to forgive. Spiderman learnt some important lessons that Christ taught 2,000 years ago. And in this way we see Spiderman grow up.

Action and Visuals

There is plenty of action in this film and it looks stunning. Maybe the younger audience will struggle with all the character depth in this film but there is plenty of action to keep them happy.

The Hulk is my favourite Marvel film because of the character development and the story. Spiderman 3 I think is as good or may even be better than the Hulk. I really enjoyed it for its depth, complexity, visuals and action. An excellent and well rounded film.
