The people of Malachi did not understand God’s love. In fact they thought God didn’t love them because they were going through a tough time. They were subjects of a foreign pagan nation and the temple they had built did not match the glory of Solomon’s temple. 

Today people assume God loves them. Many people say ‘God loves you’ without even knowing if He does or not. God does not universally love all people even though they might enjoy many things from God. After all it rains on the righteous and the unrighteous. God chooses some who will enjoy His love and others that will come under his wrath. Malachi 1:2-3 shows how God chooses to love the people of Jacob but not Esau. This explains why the Edomites disappeared entirely while Israel continued. Our success rests in God’s love for us. Let’s not be overwhelmed by evil but over come evil with God’s love that works in and through our lives.
