This pic nearly made the Rev cry Car Driver How would you drive a car? All the students said they would stick to the speed limit, although one of the lads said that there may be times when he might give it a bit of a go. It’s an interesting exercise to predict what kind of driver a student will be when they finally get behind the wheel. We make this prediction based on what we know of them, are they conservative, aggressive, afraid, timid. Road rage, Alcohol and drugs A person who is normally careful may speed or get angry with another driver if they are cut off or have a near miss. Things that happen can sometimes bring down our masks to reveal what is really inside. For example those who get drunk have their defences lowered which exposes what they really think or who they really are. If we are an angry person it will pop out when we are under pressure. The Body is the soul’s car The body is a vehicle for the soul. The soul is who you are; you make the decision and use your body to do things. What you do exposes who you are, what kind of person you are; whether you are kind, patient, angry afraid or a mix of all these things.
The Body’s affect on the soul Sadness is an emotion that we feel. Perhaps we have been hurt, or we have lost a friend in tragic circumstances. What we feel is very real. Sometimes the body can make you feel sad even though you are not. For example when you get a cold you can feel sad. Depression sometimes is the body telling your soul something that is not real even though it feels real. The body and soul are closely connected. We agreed however that the soul has the ultimate and final say as to what happens. Addictions Joshua the blue whale Jacob the soaring eagle An addiction is where we do what the body tells us without putting up much of a fight. If the body feels like chocolate and we give in every time it becomes a habit that can grow into a dependency. The soul has is to resist the impulse to eat the chocolate, or take the drugs. Morality and love Some students didn’t believe in the soul so I asked them how they understood issues like justice and love. Where does morality come from? They answered that we are governed by genetics, upbringing and the environment. One student put in that all that we do, all our memories make up who we are. I suggested that all of what do is a result of who we are. Babies and little kids Little babies are self centred, if they don’t get what they want they cry. The students responded that they need to be to survive and that they had not done anything yet to affect their soul. So I shared with them that I never had to teach my kids to lie and to fight with each other. Where did that come from? Perhaps all of our souls are flawed in some way so that we gravitate towards what is wrong rather than what is right? Blue Whales and Eagles Our discussion on the soul ended on what we would like to come back as if we could. Here are the two best options we came up with; a blue whale and an eagle. |
