Still the storm E-mail

calm sea
Christ can still your storm
In the movie I am legend billions of people are wiped out by a virus. In New York one man survives and is plunged into a world of silence and stillness. Silence is used to great effect throughout this movie; it builds tension and at times feels oppressive. Will Smith’s character is told that it is easier to hear God speak because the world has become quiet.

We live in a world of noise. It is all around us, the sound of traffic, mowers, chain saws, mobile phones, iPods in our ears, movies— and the noise of our own minds. We face so many challenges at home, work and with friends that our minds become cluttered with many different thoughts and emotions. We sometimes use noise to hide from our own thoughts— especially when our thoughts may be trying to get through to us about something in our lives. Silence can be scary because it can force our minds to dwell on our pains, our failures, our guilt and our shame.

One day a group of men were trying to row across a lake against a massive storm. They strained at the oars but were unable to make any progress. Life can be like that. No matter how hard you try you can’t seem to make ends meet and everything seems to fall apart. In the midst of that storm a man walked upon the water. He called out to the men in the boat saying: “Be of good cheer, it is I, don’t be afraid.” He stilled the storm and in the silence they worshipped him (Matthew 14:22-33).

No matter how much the wind howls and the waves crash in upon your life you can call out to the one who can still storms. Easter is a time when we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the storm stiller. Much of our agitation and fear of silence comes from within our troubled hearts. Why not make some time to be still, to give God an opportunity to speak to you. And ask God to help you hear him.
