We had a visiting leader; Andrew helping out and he got into the games and led a group. Today we went outside and sat on some green park benches in the sunshine (suffer Victorians). Our class had 6 guys, Alex, Daniel, Darrel, Stewart, Luke and Frazer (sorry if I spelled your names wrong). I was less nervous so that helped us be more relaxed this time round. We kicked off with the question “if you could be anything what would you be?” Turtle (slow and live long), butterfly (ha ha) and then I got distracted with a theory I shared about ‘time’. Some animals have very quick reflexes and reaction times. For example my canary jumps around like crazy all the time and I read that they have a resting heart rate of 1500 beats per minute (makes me feel tired). So my theory is that for the Canary I wonder if humans move like they are in slow motion. Maybe that might explain why they don’t live as long. Sometimes when we get into a crazy situation like falling off your bike time seems to slow down because your body fires up and runs quicker for a short time. Someone piped up and said imagine being a canary in the blue card lecture that went for 4 hours. That would be death by shear boredom. We tackled the word ‘spirituality’ and got something like; inner stuff, soul, inner being. We explored the idea that the spirit might affect your emotions and therefore your actions (that’s pretty deep). This means that spirituality does have a bearing on the world. Within that context someone raised the issue of religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Roman Catholicism. We spoke a little on Buddhism teaching and Alex shared how he had visited a temple in Thailand with heaps of gold everywhere. We discussed Star Wars and the Buddhist teaching of trusting the inner self and the force. Somehow we got on to movies like the Matrix a movie about there being something other than what you see. This is very much like the topic spirituality. There is more to life than what you see with your eyes and it hopefully will be good to explore this topic further. |
