We watched an episode of Futurama where Bender becomes God. When he helps people he causes disaster or they become too dependant. When he doesn’t help they lose hope and blow each other up. Bender is taught that as God you have to help in such a way that people aren’t sure you have helped so that they don’t become too dependant but don’t lose hope either.

Students were asked to draw their idea of God or what they didn’t believe about God. Some students drew ears, eyes, hands, hearts to represent that they believed in a God who saw, heard, helped and cared.

Some students thought that a massive disaster would bring people together like in the ‘Heroes’ series. Another suggestion was to remake the world and people so that they no longer had free will other than to get on with each other and enjoy the world. Stopping terrorism, wars, fights and poverty were also ideas but the problem was how this was to be done. Most students said they would make bad people disappear or put them in jail until they learnt their lesson.

Heart problem

The problem with this plan is that we would all be in jail and we would never get out. God’s plan is not to control the world from the outside (breaking free will) but changing people’s hearts so that they want to be good, so that they want to be more loving than selfish. This is why there is suffering in the world; God is seeking to change people’s hearts rather than only dealing with our behaviour. Change the heart leads to a change in behaviour and live.
