Spirituality 13/6/6 E-mail

Hi Daniel, Emily, Claire, Loren, John, Rob, Melisa, Mandy and Ellie. Our discussion I thought was provoking, particularly when John fired up on abortion. It is such a contentious issue. When does the spirit connect with the body?

Are aborted babies souls killed as well? Where does the soul come from? Does our soul exist before our bodies come into being or is it made when our bodies are? Do we keep coming back again and again until we get it right? But someone rightly asked what was right and what was wrong. We all agreed we didn’t like the idea of having to keep coming back. But the alternative of having one shot at eternity made us step back a bit. We then attempted to draw our soul, what does it look like? We all agreed that we have a soul (except maybe for one student). But we couldn’t work out whether there was a spiritual world where the soul lived. Perhaps we are like ghosts when we die? These are such good questions such important questions, I hope that we will in time be able to come to some good answers. In the end I shared what I believed: I believe God makes our spirit so that we can relate to him. For God is the spirit. And yet God gives us the freedom to choose whether we connect with him or not.

Before our discussion we watched a Simpsons episode where Bart sells his soul. All I want to say about this, because there was a lot in it, is that I could really relate to Bart. In the end he wants his soul back but can’t find the paper agreeing to sell his soul. So he prays this very sincere prayer, admitting he hadn’t payed God much attention, that he was sorry, and that he really wanted God to help him out. And low and behold the paper floats down on his bed where he is kneeling. Lisa had bought it back for Bart. I have prayed that prayer, that God would save my soul from the things I had done and the things that I had become. And like Bart, God answered my prayer and he gave me back my soul and my life. Thank you, God.
