Wolverine is the most developed character in these movies. All else is like a back drop for him to interact with. I appreciated some of the wolverine’s characteristics. Lone WolfHe's a grumpy guy, following his own lonely trail. But there is a softness underneath and an abiding loyalty and willingness for self sacrifice for those he has come to accept (perhaps into his pack). Even those he dislikes, like Cyclopes. Wolverine is very masculine, duh, he's buffed, and his fighting style is mostly based on strength and rage whereby he wields his claws. It's so cool how he can slash though walls, metal and body armour, to the disappointment of a few soldiers who broke into the school. VulnerabilityHe has issues, he has baggage he is lost to his own person and past. And so he seeks to find himself, who he was, who he is and perhaps who he wants to be. I think many people share Wolverines journey, its lostness and pain. The more he discovers the more pain he exposes. Animal senses:It's great, particularly in the first movie how they develop his extra senses, smell, hearing and animal instinct for sensing danger. Wolverine learns:All the way through the three movies he tends to expect things to revolve around him, as though he is the central character. This is fair because X-men is about Wolverine but the plot doesn't make him central to all events. And so he finds himself getting trapped by Magneto. In the third film it's great to see Wolverine using this to his advantage, to distract Magneto while Beast takes him out. Non conformist:One of the best qualities I appreciate is Wolverine's non conformity. There is a difference between being a rebel and a non conformist. I know because I am a non conformist which puts people off balance since I am also a Presbyterian Minister. But that doesn't mean I rebel, or go against everything. Wolverine doesn’t have to be on everyone’s good side. He has a lot scuffles with other characters, Cyclops being the best example. He just doesn't care what people think. But that doesn't mean he is a suck because he does care about Rogue, Iceman and even Cyclops when Jean is lost in the water in the second film. Wolverine loses some of the spot light in the second and third film. All films I think are excellent films, perhaps the second is my favourite because it's a little darker (less PG and more M). The third film is tough going with the revelation that the professor hasn't been open with us the viewers about Jean who turns out to be Phoenix. It's tough going that she kills Cyclops and that Wolverine kills her. There’s lots of action and new characters in the third film but at the expense of Wolverine and the development of some of the other characters. There isn't enough time to develop them enough. Mrs Wolverine:I really enjoyed the fight scene in the second film with the Asian version of Wolverine. She used much more finesse and martial arts where Wolverine used strength and power. It was a shame she had to die, or be effectively killed, particularly because she was under the influence of an illusion. Sometimes when I look back to before I was a Christian I can relate to this. I was bound by an intense illusion that I was the most important person in the world and that I could use and hurt other people to gain an advantage. Strong was the illusion that God did not exist which meant that I could do whatever I pleased as long as I didn't get caught. So I am grateful to my friend who put up with my claws and my nastiness, who persevered with me and shared with me the love of Christ which eventually set me free; I was transformed and am being transformed. Rating: 4 starsThese are great movies, good plots, interesting characters, excellent action. It's a definite buy for your library. |
