Achieving true beauty: Philippians 2:19-30

It has been said that beauty is only skin deep. Is that why people pierce themselves? Some pierce their ears, some their noses, some their tongues, some their lips, some their eyebrows and some pierce all those places. This reminds me of Proverbs 11:22 ‘As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.’ This means that beauty is actually something that is deeper than the skin.

 Your motive is as important as what you do. Some people help others so that they look good. Christ’s sets us free from selfishness, so that we can forget about ourselves, so that we can deny ourselves altogether. Instead we can seek to please Christ. So what would he have you be and do? Well in summary God tells us to love him and to love people. It’s not easy loving people because most of them are unlovely. But that’s the beauty of love; it touches the untouchable, it helps the undeserving, it seeks to serve rather than be served. If we could work on loving God and loving people more than loving ourselves then we won’t have to worry about our outward beauty. The Rev
